Artifact – Sound System Manual

The purpose of this assignment was to create an instructional product using the principles of instructional design. I have selected it because the manual has been used at my school to help teachers utilize the sound system on their own with minimal or no other support from me.
One thing that was very beneficial for me when creating this project was gathering the data from my needs analysis. The needs analysis showed that there was a need for such a manual in the school and that it would be used. It also showed me that very few teachers had any experience with such a sound system. Finally, it made apparent the functions teachers would need the sound system for. I was then sure to include those functions in the manual.
The primary learning from this assignment was how to bring a reader’s/learner’s attention to certain aspects of a diagram. I’ve since applied this knowledge to how-to sections of my Kid Discussion webpage as well as various professional presentations. I have also applied it to creating visual aids for helping students navigate websites and learn pieces on the pianos when I was still teaching music.
Looking at the project now, several things stick out to me that I would redo or apply if given a similar task. The first is that I would make the pictures more web accessible by compressing them to a smaller size. This would make downloading the manual much quicker. The second is I would use a program other than ActivInspire to create the manual. When I converted the file to a PDF, ActivInspire left large gaps of white between the pages of the manual. Third, I would probably make this manual or any future manuals a web page or give them a web companion where I could embed flash animations or other video showing some of the procedures. The final thing that sticks out at me is the lack of a table of contents or search function within the document. Again, both of these could be solved by using either a different program for creation or creating a web page companion using Google Sites.
